Aldous Huxley: Brave New World

Brave New World is a novel written in 1931 by Aldous Huxley and published in 1932. Set in London of AD 2540 (632 A.F. – “After Ford” – in the book), the novel anticipates developments in reproductive technology, sleep-learning, psychological manipulation, and operant conditioning that combine to profoundly change society. Huxley answered this book with a reassessment in an essay, Brave New World Revisited (1958) and with his final work, a novel titled Island (1962).

In 1999, the Modern Library ranked Brave New World fifth on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.[1] In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer listed Brave New World number 53 in “the top 100 greatest novels of all time”,[2] and the novel was listed at number 87 on the BBC‘s survey The Big Read.[3]

We have to thank Helena (or Generalitat or Diputacio or God) – we have another good book.

And the most interesting … very related to “Animal Farm” we did read few months ago.

You can “google” directly “orwell versus huxley” … or try to figure out yourself what similarities are there between those two books or authots, two ideas, and also what are the differences. Very interesting.

    1. Very interesting .we will.have the option to compare our point of view now in comparison with our memories as i read it when i was teenager. Thank you for the choice

  2. Hello Bokanovsky group! 🙂

Do you like the book? I like it. It certainly resembles a lot Animal farm but in a futuristic context, so we will have a lot to discuss in our next meeting.

I always like science fiction written many years ago: It’s nice how they imagine helicopters everywhere and tall buildings, but nobody thought about the Internet.

What is also funny is that in 2540 they are still smoking! Imagine if Aldous Huxley knew that just few years after our restrictive smoking law, politicians or actors never appear smoking on public anymore!

    Best
